Along with Ch Latour and Ch Beychevelle, whose best vineyards also lie within sight of the estuary of the Gironde, benefitting from its mild and warming influences, Ch. d’Issan has one of the oldest histories of any wine property in the Médoc. Legend has it that this wine was served at the wedding of Eleanor of Aquitaine to Henry Plantagenet, ushering in 300 years of English rule.
2014 Ch d’Issan is a great beauty, representing 45% of the property’s production. The blend contains one of the highest proportions (77%) Cabernet Sauvignon of the last 15 years, the balance being voluptuous Merlots. The wine is purple-ruby of medium depth, with fully ripened, complex aromas, very fresh. The palate shows perfect poise between rich body, concentrated fruitiness, creamy texture and powerful tannins. Bottle-age will see the emergence of the exquisite perfume for which the best Margaux are famous, and its its power, fleshiness and complex aftertaste promise outstanding development (for drinking 2022-2035+).
