2016 Hermitage, Domaine du Colombier

The cream of the domaine’s crop, this superb 2016 Hermitage is a classically dense, solidly structured, flowing Syrah – a wine that, although starting to open up, will continue to reward time in the cellar. It is a blend of three Hermitage parcels, de-stemmed, vinified in steel tank, lightly extracted and then aged in large demi muid barrels (30% new oak). Deep in colour, aromas are inviting and powerful, showing deep black cherry and damson fruit with spicy smokiness. Palate is full and well-rounded, having incredible energy and drive. Primary, black fruits interweave with savoury nuances and complexity. Although powerful, this is elegant and full of finesse, and beautifully long-flavoured (for drinking 2021-2035+).
