The Sangiovese for Il Colle’s Brunello comes from two plots – a higher altitude vineyard next to the estate buildings, with north-east exposure, the second being a warmer, south-east facing site in Castelnuovo. It aged for 40 months in large, old, Slavonian oak casks. Pale, ruby-garnet in colour, aromas are layered, intensely fragrant and pure, recalling rich, spiced, red and dried fruits, with floral complexity. This is a beautifully balanced wine, having power without heaviness, and boasting a gorgeous, velvety texture. The middle palate has deep intensity of flavour with a tightly woven, freshly tannic structure. The finish has elegance and great length. Although expressive and accessible now, this possesses the structure and concentration for mid-to long-term ageing (for drinking 2024-2039+).

Caterina Carli inherited Il Colle from her father in 2001 and has been making the wines in a time-honoured style ever since. This Montalcino estate was once part of the Colle al Matrichese, a grand property that sits at an altitude of 400-450 meters. Today, grapes from these elevated vineyards are blended with those from a more southerly vineyard in Castelnuovo dell`Abate, to give wines that combine depth and rich concentration with freshness and finesse.
In her cellar, Caterina has an incredibly light touch. her focus is on creating a crystal-clear expression of the vineyards and the vintage. She uses only wild yeasts, there is no temperature control and no filtering. You will find no barriques on the property—only huge, old Slavonian oak botti, between 3,000l and 5,000l in size.
