2023 Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu, Domaine de Verquière

The legend of the Plan de Dieu (‘Plain of God’) goes back to the Middle Ages: it was said that anyone who ventured into this area of thick scrubland, peopled by bandits, would do well to put their trust in God. Vines now thrive in this sun-drenched sector of the Côtes du Rhône, where clay soils are laced with pebbles. Having a deep ruby-purple colour, aromas of this 2023 Grenache (80%) / Syrah (20%) blend are attractive and deeply perfumed: ripe, black and red fruits, with notes of floral garrigue. Palate is full bodied and luscious, having generous, powerful fruit and velvety texture. This is a richly-styled Plan de Dieu, the finish being supple and long.
