This cluster of vineyards lies due north of Côte Rôtie, on the opposite, left bank of the Rhône, below the village of Seyssuel. The slopes, were greatly prized as far back as Roman times, the aspect and schist soils being very similar to those of Côte Rôtie, but they were abandoned after decimation by phylloxera in the 1880s and neglect during the First World War. However, in recent years, a number of Rhône vignerons have reignited interest in this area, recognizing its potential to produce top class Syrah. Ogier’s L’Ame Soeur is a splendid example, the vines having been planted in 2001. 98% Syrah with approximately 2% Viognier (co-planted and co-fermented), colour is very deep ruby-purple, nose being enchanting and floral: bramble fruits, fresh raspberry, violets, rose. Palate is seductively silky, having superb depth, intense concentration, mineral complexity and super-fine, refreshingly mouth-coating tannins. With its great length, this is one of our wines of the vintage (for drinking 2024-2035+).
