Paulin Calvet has produced a splendid 2018 white Bordeaux that is vivacious and racy. A blend of 80% Sauvignon Blanc with 20% Semillon, this aged for 7 months in oak barrels of which 30% were new, with 40% having contained a wine for one year, and 30% having held two harvests. This precise barrel ageing policy allowed for the beneficial effects of oak ageing, without risking the wine’s piercingly fresh fruitiness being muted. The wine is pale, green-gold, with very clean, Sauvignon aromas of great purity. The palate shows explosive fruit from the start, the middle being rich without heaviness, the finish balanced, supple and refreshing (for drinking 2020-2023+).
