2020 Bourgueil Le Haut de la Butte, Domaine de la Butte

The 16-hectare Domaine de la Butte was acquired by Jacky Blot in 2002. Applying an approach seen on the hillsides of Burgundy, he has separated the south-facing vineyard into different plots by geological strata as they go up the hill. From Cabernet Franc grapes growing at the top of the slope, fermented in large oak vats and with 50% having matured in French oak barriques, this 2020 Bourgueil is very deep ruby-purple in colour, aromas being intense: floral cassis and liquorice. Palate has great depth of dark berry fruit with an attractive herbal tone, tannins being super-fine and silky. This is a wine of real personality, impeccably combining richness and intensity with Cabernet Franc’s natural, vibrant freshness (for drinking 2022-2030+).
