  4. 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Pitures, Domaine Blain-Gagnard

Les Pitures is a little-known 1st Growth which lies between Volnay and Pommard, on stony ground high on the slope. In colour this is medium-deep ruby-purple, with brightly floral aromas, open and bright. Palate starts lusciously, with good middle, and finely-balanced, freshly tannic finish. This will be a winner in 4-5 years (for drinking 2025-2030+).

  5. 2020 Volnay 1er Cru Champans, Domaine Blain-Gagnard

Champans is one of the most perfectly situated First Growths of Volnay, and we consistently love and follow this wine from Blain-Gagnard. In 2020 volumes are tiny, with just 1.5 barrels in their cellar. Saving every drop, these were sealed when we visited, so we cannot give our tasting note here, but past experience tells […]

  6. 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge, Domaine Blain-Gagnard

This cuvée is assembled from five different plots across the commune, resulting in a wine of rich, fresh fruitiness – very pure Pinot – and fine balance. It was falling bright in its barrels naturally, so there was no need for fining or filtration prior to bottling. Fruitiness is agreeably soft, finish is easy, gentle […]

  7. 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge, Domaine Blain-Gagnard

“For me, 2020 is a classic year for Burgundy Pinot Noir” says Jean-Marc Blain. Volume is 25% down for this wine, thanks to the dryness of the 2020 summer. Pale ruby-purple, this shows fresh, fragrant raspberry aromas – incredibly pure. Palate is medium-bodied and lively, with silky tannins and vivacious length (for drinking 2022-2025+).

  8. 2018 Château Haut-Madrac, Haut-Medoc

This is one of our favourite properties in the Haut-Médoc, with vineyards bordering Pauillac, and under the same ownership as Ch Batailley. The 2018 is perfumed, ripe and intense on the nose, with lovely structure to keep its ample flesh in check. Perfect for immediate drinking, but will remain in place for a further six, […]

  9. 2021 Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune Rouge, Domaine Agnès Paquet

This is an assembly of wines from two vineyards, one over 35 years old, one newly-planted, both in Meloisey, coming from limestone/clay and darker soils. Colour is medium-deep, bright purple, aromas are fragrant with Pinot Noir character, very fresh. Palate shows balanced structure with dense fruitiness and a soft finish (for drinking 2023-2025+).

  10. 2017 Château Larrivaux, Haut-Médoc

This property is located just west of Saint-Estèphe in Cissac, in the northern Haut-Médoc. It has belonged to the same family for over three centuries. The 2017 is a beautifully balanced wine that is reaching perfect maturity. It has a harmonious, multi-layered mouthfeel, with good stuffing and elegant flow throughout.

  11. 2018 Domaine de Chevalier Rouge, Grand Cru Classé, Pessac-Léognan
  12. 2019 Scorpo Estate Shiraz, Mornington Peninsula

This Estate Shiraz is made according to Côte-Rôtie winemaking tradition, this 2019 having a finesse, restraint and gorgeous perfume that is reminiscent of Northern Rhône Syrah. Deep purple in colour, aromas are tightly woven, with notes of black cherry and violets. Palate is medium bodied and very finely textured, having a sweet core of middle […]

  13. 2020 Scorpo Old Cherry Orchard 10K Pinot Noir, Mornington Peninsula

“The cherries from this orchard had such intense and distinct flavours that I was fascinated and optimistic that the same would be the case for Pinot Noir,” says Paul Scorpo. “I don`t farm this vineyard,” he continues, “it is more like gardening.” Planted in 2013 at high density (10,000 vines per hectare), the vines are […]

  14. 2019 Scorpo Estate Pinot Noir, Mornington Peninsula

This fruit for Scorpo`s Estate Pinot comes from two plots – The Original Planting (planted in 1997) and The Old Cherry Orchard (2013), both on old, Eocene, volcanic soil. It spent 12 months in French barriques (20% new). This 2019 is a fleshy, spicy, rich Pinot style. Mid ruby colour, the nose is open and […]

  15. 2020 Scorpo Eocene Original Planting Pinot Noir, Mornington Peninsula

Scorpo’s Eocene Pinot Noir is a barrel selection from the original, 1997 plantings on the Scorpo Family vineyard in Merricks North on the Mornington Peninsula. The combination of the plot`s iron rich, volcanic, Eocene soils and the low yielding MV6 Pinot Noir clone (which originates from the Clos de Vougeot in Burgundy) give a wine […]
