The vines of Grand-Puy-Lacoste lie on mounds of fast-draining gravels on the heights above Pauillac, perfectly exposed to sunshine and beneficial breezes. The breezes keep grapes healthy, and cool at night-time – which is crucial if the summer is baking, as in 2020. Average age of the vines, which lie all around the château, is 38 years. A quick, uniform flowering allowed grapes in the bunches to reach maturity harmoniously. The 2020 blend consists of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, with 24% Merlot, now ageing in 75% new oak barrels. The yield here is approx. 20% below the average for the Pauillac appellation in 2020, and this translates into exceptional richness and concentration. Colour is bright, deep purple, aromas open, spicy and very fragrant. Palate shows charming fruit, fine tannins, fresh length, and sumptuous aftertaste. This is a classic Grand Puy Lacoste of great beauty (for drinking 2028-2045+).
