The Tesseron family has been owner here since 1959, and also at Château Pontet-Canet in Pauillac since 1975. When Managing Director Basile Tesseron joined his father at Lafon-Rochet in 2006, the estate was still very much in the shadow of Pontet-Canet, despite being barely half a mile from its vines, and sandwiched directly between Cos d’Estournel and Lafite. Under Basile’s management, Lafon-Rochet has become one of the most exciting estates in the Médoc. It has borrowed some of the artisan philosophy of Ponet-Canet in terms of biodynamic and organic practices, investment has been made in vineyards and winery, and the great Jean-Claude Berrouet (who was winemaker at Pétrus for 40 years) and Eric Boissenot (famed for his guidance at top Medoc châteaux) have worked together with them as wine-making consultants.
The 2020 Lafon-Rochet is transparent evidence that all this work and investment has paid off. It has been assembled from 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Impressive purple-ruby, with complex, fine aromas, it is full-bodied and rich, with wonderful fruit focus and purity, creamy texture, invigorating freshness and refined, harmonious aftertaste (for drinking 2028-2045+).
