This château was bought by Hugh Barton from Ireland, in 1821. It has been in the same family for longer than any other Haut-Médoc classed growth. Current owners are Anthony Barton, his daughter Lilian, her husband Michel and their two children Mélanie and Damien (who represent the 8th generation of Bartons, and have now joined the property).
The 2020 wine is a blend of 53.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and 8.5% Cabernet Franc, presently ageing in 60% new barrels. This is a higher proportion of Merlot than we used to find at Langoa – accounted for by the lovely quality of long-established vines, and an extra plot (planted 15 years ago) whose production merits inclusion in the Grand Vin. The wine is of medium deep, rich purple colour, with finely complex, black fruit aromas. Palate shows densely fruity attack, good body, balance, smoothness and splendid length (for drinking 2025-2040+).
