Corton-Charlemagne is a large Grand Cru, with vineyards being planted on a range of soils and sub-soils, facing in varied directions. The Faiveley plot of old vines lies high on the hillside, above their Clos des Cortons, facing due east. The rising sun gives the ripening grapes an early advantage, then the plot’s easterly exposure ensures the grapes do not over-bake. This 2020 is absolutely magnificent: pale lemon-gold in colour, appetisingly fragrant and fresh on the nose, rich, sumptuous, complete and thrilling, when tasted. This is again one of the greatest, most potentially complex examples of the Grand Cru (for drinking 2024-2035+).
