The Sottocastello di Novello vineyard sits at 470m, right next door to one of the best-known vineyards in Serralunga – Cannubi. The Nebbiolo grapes that go in to this wine come from vines at the steepest, top section of the vineyard, where they experience a large diurnal temperature range, creating a wine of great aromatic complexity. Cà Viola is the flagship producer of this cru, owning 2 of the 7 hectares that exist. As is typical of Barolo, colour is pale garnet. An incredibly perfumed, rich nose of intense, ripe red fruits, spiced orange peel and subtle, dried rose-petal notes leads to a full bodied, fleshy palate. This is a complex, detailed, multi-layered wine of very fine texture, great power, and magnificent length. Still young and fresh, it can be approached now but will develop further over the next ten years. Now – 2026+.
