At an elevation of nearly 1,000 feet and only a few miles from the cool Pacific Ocean, Viña Los Vascos has a privileged and unique position amongst the Chilean vineyards. For over two centuries, the Eyzaguirre/Echenique family has owned this land and has produced wines of great quality, which were mainly consumed by the family. In 1986, they formed a partnership with Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite), in order to develop Viña Los Vascos internationally.
Carmenère, which has almost disappeared from its native France, has become Chile`s signature grape. This 2012 Carmenère Grand Reserve was matured in French oak barrels for 12 months, which has added a sweet spiciness to the pure herbal-cassis aromas here. This is a full bodied, rich-but-fresh style of red, with creamy, supple texture, ripe, chocolatey, blackcurrant flavours, and a long, suave finish. The perfect wine to pour with a chargrilled steak, we suggest.
