The Bourgueil vineyards run along a limestone escarpment on the north bank of the Loire. This ‘Prestige’ cuvée comes from vines planted mid-slope, where deep clay combines with limestone, accounting for the power and depth we regularly see in this wine. Deep ruby-purple colour, aromas are intense: floral blackcurrants and spice. On the palate, this is full and densely packed, but retains the freshness and intricate structure one expects from top quality Cabernet Franc. With very fine, focussed flavours and marked-but-ripe tannins, if you can resist opening this right away (we recommend decanting it) it will be a particular beauty in 2-3 years time, and will gain further savoury complexity over another 10+ years – the 1989 vintage is still drinking beautifully.
