The Last Chance is a beautifully sited 2-hectare terrace perched in bright, clear air above the Earnscleugh Valley. It nestles amongst a small cluster of the world`s most southerly vineyards and takes its name from the watercourse that runs through its heart, hand dug by gold miners in the 1860s: The Last Chance. The vineyard`s southerly location, with raw schist gravel soils and surrounded by wild herbs, gives a style of Pinot Noir that is the most robust and structured of the Proprietor`s Reserve selection. A third of the bunches went into the fermentation vat whole, and the wine spent 11 months in French oak barriques, one third of which was new. This wine`s pale ruby colour is truly deceptive as both nose and palate are packed with intensity and flavour. Nose is open and enticing, recalling red cherries, thyme and sweet spice. Full, rounded and deep, this has rich structure, generous middle and a long, powerful finish (for drinking 2018-2023+).
