In the foothills surrounding the southern section of the Rhône there are several villages with well-placed vineyards, whose wines are awarded the status of “Côtes du Rhône Villages.” While they may not possess the weight and power of Châteauneuf du Pape, the best growers make sumptuous bottles at very competitive price levels. Domaine Sainte-Anne is one such address. The domaine was set up by Guy Steinmaier (a Burgundian by birth) in the early 1960s, when he moved to the tiny hamlet of Les Celettes near Saint Gervais. Today it is run by his sons, Jean and Alain. We have followed the estate’s wines for several vintages, consistently finding them to have astonishing harmony and precision.
