It is astonishing how careful wine-making can conjure delicious quality from little-known sites. This wine comes from villages which lie between the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune: Comblanchien, where the organically-farmed plot is named La Berchère, and Corgoloin where the vineyard is named Aux Cloux Virey. In colour, this is rich, ruby-purple, the nose being attractively fragrant. The palate is medium-bodied, with impressively dense fruit, excellent middle and follow-through, with rich, well-judged tannins. This is a splendid wine, and a terrific, surprise discovery from an appellation we rarely list – highly recommended, and great value (for drinking 2019-2026+).
