Most of these vines were planted by Claudie’s great-grandfather in 1919, so are nearly 100 years old. They are still in rude health, very few having needed replanting. A special caterpillar tractor cultivates them, aided by horse-power (the use of weed-killers has been stopped). Colour is deep, red-purple, the nose being fragrant and richly perfumed. The palate shows ample structure, with impressively complex, rich aftertaste, and fine tannins. The grape-bunches were so healthy that no de-stemming was needed, so this is a rare example of 100% whole-bunch fermentation. It will develop intricate, soft aftertastes, with outstandingly creamy texture as it ages (for drinking 2020-2028+).
