This 2016 is the most exquisite Beaucastel Châteauneuf we have ever tasted at this early stage. The cool summer nights have given the wine the most wonderful line of freshness and beautiful finesse, balancing its intense concentration and richness. Marc Perrin’s grandfather was a pioneer of Mourvèdre planting in the Rhône. These old, organically-cultivated vines will contribute 30% of the final blend (giving glorious perfume) – an equal measure to old-vine Grenache, with the other 11 permitted Châteauneuf varieties being used in smaller measures. The wine is currently ageing in large, old oak foudres. Colour is deep ruby, aromas being very concentrated and multi-layered, combining red and dark berry fruits, with violet florality. This is full, suave and powerful in the mouth, with tightly woven structure, elegant texture and a pure, precise, long finish. This comes highly recommended for both mid and longer-term ageing – for drinking 2020-2030+.
