2021 Burgundy En Primeur
HH&C has shipped the beautiful wines from the prestigious Domaine des Lambrays in Morey-Saint-Denis for more than three decades. The last seven years have seen a particularly energetic drive for quality improvement, with the property having been acquired by Bernard Arnault, the head of Louis Vuitton Moët-Hennessy, in 2015. Bernard’s portfolio of great wines includes Cheval-Blanc and d’Yquem, so it is not surprising that he lost no time in up-grading the facilities at Domaine des Lambrays. We are full of admiration for the passionate commitment of the new owner and his team, led by Manager and Winemaker Jacques Devauges. 2021 is Jacques’ third vintage here, his previous experiences having been at three domaines on the Côte de Nuits, then at Domaine du Clos de Tart, the Lambrays neighbour in Morey-Saint-Denis. He is profoundly steeped in great winemaking, and has been steadily introducing carefully thought-through improvements, with respect for the traditions that are so fundamental here. Conversion to organic cultivation is also key to his winemaking ethos.
Tasting the 2021 wines with Jacques in the domaine’s newly installed winery and barrel cellar, he explained that the vintage was not without its challenges, in large thanks to the successive frosts of 6th, 7th and 8th April. He recounted: “we lost 50% of our crop in 2021 – and 85% of our white grapes. The vines were like statues for the three weeks following the frost, delaying the growing season. Things got going again as good weather set in in May, but there was regular disease pressure. We had to work harder than ever in the vineyards. Fortunately, by early September, with breezes from the north and ample sunshine, the grapes were exquisitely healthy and ripening well. We harvested between 22nd and 27th September.”
