Beautiful 2012 Brunello di Montalcino –
Il Colle is a little known gem in Tuscany’s Montalcino region. The estate was once part of the Colle al Matrichese, a grand property that sits at an altitude of 400-450 meters. Today, grapes from these elevated vineyards are blended with those from a more southerly vineyard in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, giving wines of depth, freshness and finesse. Having inherited the estate from her father in 2001, Caterina Carli runs Il Colle with unwavering attention to detail. It was with the 2007 vintage that we had the pleasure of meeting her in Montalcino for the first time, where we fell in love with her wines.
In the vineyards, Caterina has total respect for nature – she is as non-interventionist as possible, an approach that demands that she spend considerable time in the vineyards, allowing her to know exactly what is happening at any one time. In her cellar, Caterina uses only wild yeasts, there is no temperature control nor filtering. You will find no barriques on the property—only huge old Slavonian oak botti, between 3,000l and 5,000l in size. As a result, Caterina’s wines are a crystal-clear expression of the vineyards and the vintage.
The 2012 vintage in Brunello is truly excellent. “Alongside 2010, 2012 is one of my best vintages ever,” Caterina told us, “we had perfect growing conditions.” The proof is in the wine – our tasting note and drinking dates are below. With limited availability, we encourage you not to delay in placing your order. In addition, Caterina’s earlier drinking, Rosso di Montalcino 2015 is superb – “Brunello for the people!” as she calls it. We recommend a case of each.
