Jancis Robinson’s Purple Pages

We’re delighted that Jancis Robinson has written reviews for several wines in our recent Bordeaux Discoveries.

Reviews below are reproduced with the kind permission of JancisRobinson.com.

2015 Chateau Le Peyrat La Chapelle, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux

…Light garnet. Frank nose with a little sweet oak on the palate and some fine tannin receding. Very much an unexaggerated right-bank wine. You could drink this now but there is no urgency. Vigorous. Better balanced than many more expensive wines even if it is not that concentrated. VGV 14% Drink 2018-2022

2016 Château Martignan, Médoc

…Transparent crimson. Light and leafy on the nose. Fresh and very slightly sweet start and lightly stony end. Rather delicate and forward for a Médoc. Clean and racy verging on lean. Not bad but that slight sweetness slightly bothers me. In view of the lightness of body, do not serve this to someone whose previous wine-drinking experience has been Australian. 13% Drink 2018-2020

2015 Château Beynat, Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux

…Bright crimson. Rather alluringly perfumed and fresh with a sweet-fruited undertow. This and the Ch Le Peyrat demonstrate just how much value cn be found in Castillon. Still some tannin in evidence; I’d wait a few months before starting to drink this. GV 13.5% Drink 2018-2021

2015 Château Grand Moulin Macquin, Montagne St-Emilion

…Bright garnet. Interesting savoury, quite penetrating nose. Well-balanced palate with the slightly inky pencil-shavings ingredient a welcome sign of the Cabernet Franc. A wine with a beginning, middle and end. 14% Drink 2018-2023

2015 Château Grand Moulin Macquin, Montagne St-Emilion

…Bright garnet. Interesting savoury, quite penetrating nose. Well-balanced palate with the slightly inky pencil-shavings ingredient a welcome sign of the Cabernet Franc. A wine with a beginning, middle and end. 14% Drink 2018-2023

2014 Château Toumalin, Canon-Fronsac

…Bright crimson with reasonable depth of colour. Quite a fresh rigorous nose with the vigour of Fronsac. Firm backbone and a chalky finish. Very appetising. Well bought as this is just starting to drink well. A slightly gamey note on the finish. 14% Drink 2018-2023

2015 Château Bournac, Cru Bourgeois Médoc

…Mid crimson. There is real substance and intensity here on the nose – quite a step up. Serious wine that could stand its own with some lesser classed growths. Well bought! Not sure I can be quite as generous as 17 but it’s definitely worthy of 16.5 and is VGV. No great hurry to drink this well constituted, dry but not drying wine. 13.5% Drink 2019-2025

2014 Vieux Château Saint André, Montagne Saint-Emilion

…Mid bright crimson. Elegant and polished on the nose without being weak or scrawny. Less obviously sweet than some of the wines in this collection with a bit of a back story. Builds towards the dry, appetising finish. It is quite a contrast to the much more bumptious Grand Moulin Macquin from the same appellation. Horses for courses perhaps. This has an attractively cooling fluidity on the pretty persistent finish. But from bottle is certainly ready to enjoy already. The magnums could make a useful wine with a story for entertaining. 13% Drink 2017-2025

2011 Château Capbern Gasqueton, Saint-Estèphe

…Deep garnet. More nuanced colour than many. This really does smell classy. Very juicy but with the stony background of any St-Estèphe. Softer than most vintages but definitely ready to enjoy already. Fresh and vigorous. Quite long. Nice wine, but I think the 2014 is better value. In the UK, however, you have to commit to a whole case whereas HH&C are offering the
opportunity to buy by this by the single bottle. 13% Drink 2016-2022

2012 Château Le Côteau, Margaux

…Mid crimson. Open and evolved on the nose. Reasonable perfume but just a little more like the boudoir than the vineyard. Certainly not heavy and with a little evolution but I think there are better buys in this selection. Bit of a fast fade. 13% Drink 2018-2022
