Description

Chenin Blanc from Savennières too often falls under the radar. This wine from Domaine des Deux Vallées is a reason to discover it, such is its quality, vivacity an elegance. The vines lie in the Clos du Petit Beaupréau, where sandy loam topsoil leads to a schist base rock. Very pale gold colour, the nose has intense aromas of spiced apple tart and floral honeysuckle. Palate is full bodied, powerfully concentrated and intricately structured. With a beautiful, suave texture, the finish is vibrant and piercingly fresh (for drinking 2022-2025+).

Domaine des Deux Vallées is run by Philippe Socheleau who, together with his father Réné, bought the 36 hectare property 2001. Their experience lay in the apple business rather than in wine production - Philippe quickly focussed on honing his winemaking skills both by study and with a nearby vigneron friend, whilst his father tended the vines.

One of the first things Philippe did was to rip out the plantings of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay and replant with Chenin Blanc. They are now very much a specialist of that variety, producing Chenin from estate owned vineyards in Savennières, Anjou, Chaume and Coteaux du Layon.
