“The cherries from this orchard had such intense and distinct flavours that I was fascinated and optimistic that the same would be the case for Pinot Noir,” says Paul Scorpo. “I don`t farm this vineyard,” he continues, “it is more like gardening.” Planted in 2013 at high density (10,000 vines per hectare), the vines are trained low and hard pruned to give balance to the canopy and control yields. “The Abel Pinot Noir clone here classically gives opulent, voluptuous wines with incredibly silky texture,” – the result in 2020 is sublime. Pale ruby colour, aromas are airy and scented, with notes of red cherries and wild strawberries. Full and vital, this has very fine tannins, being a wine of beautiful concentration, coolness and elegance (for drinking 2022-2025+).
