En Brescul is a low-yielding, stony hillside plot, facing due east, situated above Pommard Pezerolles and Les Epenots. It ripens later than those First Growths, of course, but 2022’s dry summer suited the plot well. Global warming is certainly helping to bring better ripeness, and so is intelligent input by the grower. For the first time, 100% whole clusters were included here “to bring extra finesse and freshness,” we were told by Joannès. “Super-gentle extractions were also key in 2022.” This Domaine is at the forefront of those demonstrating how to make Pommards of charm and softness. Tasted while still in barrel, colour is relatively pale, with the nose being strikingly perfumed. Palate has rich, initial fruitiness, a full, fragrant middle and very fine structure, finishing long and fine (for drinking 2025-2030+).
