Description
Esprit de Blonde is from the steep Le Mollard lieu-dit on the Côte Blonde, where the terraced vines burrow down into gneiss bedrock. In 2020 the blend is 90% Syrah and 10% Viognier, which are co-planted, and then harvested and fermented together. The wine will age for a total of 18 months in new oak barrels. Opaque purple in the glass, the nose is amazingly aromatic and complex, recalling violet and black fruits, with delicate hints of white peach and sweet spice. This is a suave, supple wine, having great depth of flavour and beautiful flesh and volume. Structure is fine-boned, the finish having vitality and persistence (for drinking 2025-2037+).

Pierre Gaillard
Producing wines that are generous and harmonious is what Pierre Gaillard and his daughter Jeanne strive for at their family Domaine. Pierre was not born into a family of winemakers – his mother was a nurse and his father worked for the railways – but his passion for outdoor life and learning led him to a career in wine. He studied viticulture and oenology in Beaune and Montpellier, going on to work as Vineyard Manager at Guigal in Côte-Rôtie. He bought his first vines in 1981. 3 hectares in Saint-Joseph’s Clos de Cuminaille, in the high slopes of the commune of Malleval, at the northern edge of Saint-Joseph. Pierre now makes wines from 70 hectares, spread across the northern Rhône. Understanding the minutiae and complexities of each parcel, Pierre skilfully translates these details into each wine he makes.
