Description

Indigenous to the mountains of the Alto Adige, Kerner is a cross between Schiava and Riesling, being best suited to warm, south-east facing vineyards. Thanks to the wide temperature difference between day and night, the grapes retain their natural, steely acidity whilst developing intense aromas. The result is an exhilarating, unoaked white wine with a scented nose, recalling honeysuckle, lime and white peach. Palate is light, racy and vital, with pure, concentrated flavours. This is a characterful wine, which reflects its fresh, mountainous origins.

Kurtatsch is a beautiful village in the Alto Adige, where the vines are grown up to 900m, in spectacular karst landscape. The terrain is steep and dramatic, with a diverse range of soils, geology and microclimates. Kellerei Kurtatsch is one of Alto Adige’s smallest and oldest co-operative wineries, founded in 1900. They look after 190 hectares of vines, working with 190 growers. “We like terroir; we don’t like too much oak. These are elegant mountain wines,” says winemaker Othmar Doná. The fresh, pure, precise style of the Kurtatsch whites and reds have made them solid HH&C listings.
