With our En Primeur price having dropped by 13%, compared with the 2022, we can recommend this 2023 Batailley particularly wholeheartedly. The Castéja family has poured huge investment into this property, and the results are very much in evidence. It is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot, currently ageing in 57% new oak barrels. Excellent decisions in vineyards and cellar were crucial in creating a Batailley of impeccable balance. “Compared with our neighbours, we were one of the last to finish harvesting,” Frédéric Castéja told us. “The extra days were key to bringing full maturity to the Cabernet Sauvignon. Then we were very strict about the temperature for fermentation, being a maximum of 28`C. This gave a more gentle extraction, and helped to lock in freshness.” Deep ruby-purple in the glass, aromas are tightly woven, with fresh blackcurrant and cedar spice. Palate is full, pure and focussed, having a well-concentrated core, and very fine tannins. This is a classy, harmoniously-built Batailley (for drinking 2030-2045+).
