2018 Brunello di Montalcino – Il Colle

Elegantly Structured 2018 Brunello di Montalcino
Il Colle

2018 is an aromatically compelling, finely structured vintage for Brunello di Montalcino. Following the drought year of 2017, the 2018 growing season was notably cooler and fresher than average, with no lack of water. Winter rain and snowfall replenished reserves, leading to a cool, wet spring. July was hot, but without heat spikes, regular showers being a feature throughout the summer months. “Almost every day it rained in August,” Caterina Carli of Il Colle told us. “Maybe just for 15 or 30 minutes, but it became part of the routine for that month.” September saw significant diurnal temperature variations, intensifying the flavour profile of the Sangiovese grapes, and allowing for full ripeness to be achieved, prior to harvest, which began at the end of that month.

“It was a difficult year in vineyards,” Caterina recounted. “We had a lot of rain, we feared for mildew, but with a lot of hard work I am very happy that the grapes were healthy and beautiful. We had a 2017 with no rain at all, and 2018 with so much – this is the beauty of grape growing and winemaking! We must do our very best every season!”

We are delighted to offer, below, the 2018 vintage from this Montalcino gem. With unwavering attention to small details, and sensitivity in the winery, Caterina has created a crystal-clear expression of her vineyards and the 2018 vintage.
