2018 Burgundy En Primeur - Domaine du Cellier aux Moines

Domaine du Cellier aux Moines

We are thrilled to offer below the 2018 vintage from this historical and outstanding Givry domaine.

Domaine du Cellier aux Moines is one of Burgundy’s oldest winemaking properties, dating back to 1130. As with many of the region’s greatest wines, including Clos de Vougeot and Clos de Tart, the Clos and winery were established by Cistercian monks, and it produced wine for the local Abbaye de la Ferté for nearly seven centuries. Following the French Revolution, the land was divided and sold, however the borders of the original 5-hectare Clos still exist today, lying on a magnificent south facing, clay-limestone hillside, now classified as Givry Premier Cru.

Recognising the potential of the hillside and the neglected Cellier buildings, the Pascal family purchased the property in 2004, going on to acquire many of the original, surrounding vineyards. This marked the start of the domaine’s renaissance. Initially, priority was given to restoring the vines. This was followed by the rejuvenation of the Cellier and finally the creation of a modern, gravity-fed winery built in the old quarry of Givry, below the original buildings. Now 100% organic certified and with sensitive yet cutting-edge wine-maker Guillaume Marko in place since 2015, this domaine is raising the bar in Givry, producing beautiful, classic, perfumed Pinot Noir.

Givry continues to be an under-appreciated source of fine red Burgundy – we highly recommend the following wine from the historical Clos, which is attractively priced for the quality it represents.

This wine is offered in bond UK, for delivery in late 2020/early 2021.
