Château de Beaucastel 2021 Vintage En Primeur

Owned by the Perrin family, Château de Beaucastel is one of the Southern Rhône’s most well-recognized and highly respected names. They are always one of the first to release the new vintage onto the market En Primeur, which we tasted with winemaker Cesar Perrin in early October 2022.

Coming after several hot years, 2021 is a refreshingly cooler vintage. It was also a winegrower’s year, as meticulous care and time in the vineyards were crucial for grape health and quality. Frost on the night of 7th April impacted the most precocious plots, with Syrah being particularly affected – leading to a loss of 20% in volume. Spring was then wet, followed by a not enormously hot summer, with light winds warding off any humidity in the vine canopy brought by summer showers. Harvest began on 30th August, also requiring immense organisation to respond to interruptions by rain and to ensure that full maturity was obtained.

Tasting these wines this month, we were impressed by their superb freshness and vibrant aromatic clarity. This is not a powerful, super-charged vintage here, rather one where finesse and poise are to the fore. It is with great pleasure that we offer the following to our customers, En Primeur, for shipment to the UK in autumn 2023.
