Domaine Seguin-Manuel – Celebrating a Decade of Vintages at HH&C

Our Buying Director, Siobhán Astbury reports :

Thibaut Marion

2010 was the first vintage that we shipped from Seguin-Manuel. The property was founded in 1824, however its links with Burgundy vineyards date back as far as 1720. The business was bought by Thibaut Marion in 2004, his ambition being to breathe new life into the domaine. Thibaut comes from a ten-generation family of Beaune winegrowers, where he started his career and honed his skills. Anthony Hanson MW first tasted his wines when the firm was still based in Savigny, in a 14th century vat-house with splendid, vaulted cellars which had been built by the Abbey of Cîteaux. On the outside wall could be seen one of the Latin inscriptions for which Savigny is famous. “If my memory serves me right, there are five reasons for drinking: the arrival of a guest, present and future thirst, the quality of the wines and any other reason you like – 1772.”

In his 18 years at the property, Thibaut has increased the domaine’s estate, which now covers 8.5 hectares, predominantly in Savigny, with more recent additions in the villages of Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet, Pommard, Meursault and Vosne-Romanée. The vineyard area has been certified organic since the 2015 vintage. Wine-making was fine-tuned when they moved to a new winery in Beaune, with double sorting of the bunches at harvest, temperature-controlled fermentations with indigenous yeasts, maturation in rejuvenated and renewed oak barrels, and bottling with only a light filtration.

Since our first shipments of Thibaut’s 2010 Savigny-Lès-Beaune Vieilles Vignes and Savigny-Lès-Beaune 1er Cru Lavières, this property has become a permanent and expanding fixture in our En Primeur Burgundy selection, with ready-to-drink bottles being available from our shops and for delivery from our warehouse. In our 2020 vintage offer we chose 10 of Thibaut’s wines for our range, of which two were white. His drive for quality consistently brings excellent results, and whilst quality has finesse have increased, these wines remain superb value.

We very much look forward to launching Thibaut’s 2021 wines in January 2023. In the meantime, our current listings are available to buy via our website and shops. We also invite you to discover the property in this 5 minute video:
